Juror's Statement

As a medium, photography is in a constant state of evolution. Reflecting on its origins back in the early 1800's, it's curious to wonder how its creators would receive the wild and dynamic power it has washed over the modern world.

While jurying this show I am reminded of not only the power of the medium, but also its incredible shapeshifting ability. Works selected range in a sprawling interpretation of lens-based media from large prints of an image digitally broken down again and again to create an unidentifiable photo, to mysterious Oreo cookies hovering over and dunking into milk, and a Frankie doll posed wearing aluminum foil clothes and photographed in a style that mimics high fashion. The work in this show embodies a wide and energetic representation of contemporary photography today.
